First half strikes set Rovers on their way

By by Steve Esdale at Hamlet Croft on Monday, 25th January 2010.

RIDGEONS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: Haverhill Rovers 2 Stanway Rovers 0, match report.

Haverhill notched up a good result against their Essex opponents with two first half goals.

Marc Abbott set them on their way in the 18th minute, away defender Joshua Gould slipping while attempting a mid-air clearance, Scott Wilby cutting the ball back and Abbott's shot deflected off a defender making a challenge at the same time to send the ball the opposite way of goalkeeper Michael Church's dive and into the net.

This lead was doubled on the stroke of half-time when Stanway captain Alex Drennan was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, Stuart Wardley scoring from the spot kick.

A frustrated Stanway had manager Steve Downey sent to the stands in the 56th minute and were left cursing their luck when substitute Luke Callander hit the face of the post with a header that left home goalkeeper Matt Morrison stranded.

Martin Curtis beat Morrison with a curling 35 yard drive but also found the upright.

Home sub Harry Halls also drew a fine point blank save out of Church near the end.

ROVERS (4-5-1): Morrison; P Abbott, Holmes, Wardley, Shipton; Wilby, M Abbott (Halls, 85), Hunt, Harper (Challis, 55), Cogger; Salmons (Banham, 78). Subs not used : Kent, Westcott.
