Five town triathletes take part in St Neots event

Monday, 9th September 2013.

Five Haverhill triathletes represented the town at St Neots on Sunday where three different distance races were held.

The Olympic distance race consisted of a 0.9mile (1.5k) swim followed by a slightly-longer 28 mile (45k) cycle and finally a six mile (10k) run.

Jackie Dockerill in her first Olympic-distance race and Jack Tappin both competed in this distance, with Dockerill completing the swim in 37min 30sec, the cycle in 1hr 41min 34sec and the run in 49min 9sec for a total time of 3hr 13min 38sec.

Tappin completed the swim in 44min 54sec, the cycle in 1hr 34min 12sec and the run in 51min 8sec to finish the course in 3hr 17min 45sec.

Competing in the sprint distance event (half of the Olympic distance) were Mandy Bunn, Susannah Convey and triathlon debutante Elaine Carr.

Bunn managed the swim in 16min 58sec, the cycle in 43min 15sec and the run in 22min 37sec to finish in 1hr 25 min 14sec.

Convey was minutes behind as she swam the course in 15min 45sec, completed the cycle route in 46min 50sec and the two laps of the park in 22min 22sec to cross the finish line in 1hr 27min 8sec.

Carr managed the swim in 24min 6sec, the cycle in 1hr 9min 25sec and the run in 31min 5sec t0 finish in 2hr 9min 59sec.

Dockerill and Tappin will both be among the Haverhill Running Club members covering a leg of next weekend’s Round Norfolk Relay, while next month Bunn will aim for a fast time in the Anglian Water Standard 2014 European qualifying event.

Tappin has completed seven triathlons this year (four Olympic, three middle/half-Iron distance – double an Olympic) after only taking up the sport last autumn, and will now compete in next month’s Tough Mudder race in Cheshire before resuming triathlon next spring.

“St Neots was a nice course, though the cycle was a bit longer than usual and the run got a bit repetitive with four laps,” said the 26-year-old.

“I’m a bit sad to have finished my last triathlon of 2013 but pleased with how I’ve done this year, working up to the longer distances and particularly staying injury-free.

“Hopefully I can improve and be faster in 2014, though I’m still a long way off upping the distance.”
