Former Haverhill girl picks up charity ideas at hospice

Wednesday, 19th January 2011.

A former Haverhill girl has spent a week at St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds picking up tips for a charity she now helps to run in Herefordshire.

St Nicholas Hospice Care welcomed a special visitor this week – Tina Pamplin, a trustee and director of a small Herefordshire charity, who was on the hunt for ideas and information.

Tina, who grew up in Haverhill and now lives in Ross-on-Wye, spent a week ‘shadowing’ St Nicholas Hospice Care ommunity fund raiser Ian Norris, to learn more about best practice and how a successful, larger charity operates.

Tina is a trustee and voluntary director of fund raising at Salter’s Hill Charity, which provides services for people with a learning disability from its Ledbury and Gorsley bases, in Herefordshire.

During her time at St Nicholas Hospice Care she learned how its fund raising team operates and spoke to a range of staff members about their jobs and the hospice’s history.

Ian took her out and about in Sudbury and Haverhill, where she visited businesses and schools which support the hospice, and a local newspaper.

Tina, a former security investigator at mobile phone operator Everything Everywhere Ltd – formerly known as Orange – gave up her salaried job in November to spend nine months working for Salter’s Hill on a voluntary basis.

“Spending time at St Nicholas Hospice Care has been a very valuable exercise, giving me an insider experience you couldn’t pay for,” she said.

“It has helped me to really see the bigger picture, because Salter’s Hill is such a small charity in comparison.

"I know that St Nicholas Hospice Care has got to be the size it is in the same time Salter’s Hill has existed – just over 25 years - so I can see how successful something can get in a small space of time. I now realise what we should be aiming towards.

“One week here has given me stacks of ideas to take back to Salter’s Hill.”

Ian said he had enjoyed welcoming Tina to the team. “It’s really been good to share ideas and hear how other charities operate. It’s so valuable to keep on learning, so we can all do our jobs better,” he said.

I must point out that I have been elevated above my station in this article: I do not run the Charity. Salter's Hill has a Board of Director's, of which, I am just one. There is a dedicated and specialist team of staff that manage the day to day running of the organisation.
