Four per cent increase in GCSE success rate

Wednesday, 25th August 2010.

Provisional GCSE results for schools in Suffolk this year show the largest increase for seven years.

Around 7,600 students received their results yesterday with four per cent more achieving five A*-C grade GCSEs, including English and Maths compared with last year.

This year in Suffolk, 52.5 per cent of young people reached the standard, compared to 2009 figures which showed that nationally only 49.8 per cent of young people did.

Those Suffolk schools in the previous Government’s National Challenge category made good progress, averaging a six per cent increase. All of the county’s National Challenge schools achieved more than the 30 per cent minimum standard.

Clr Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council portfolio holder for children, schools and young people said: “This 4.0 per cent rise demonstrates a significant improvement and illustrates the impact of the county’s strategy to raise attainment.

"Headteachers, teachers and students should be congratulated on their commitment and enthusiasm for learning that has resulted in this tremendous achievement.

"In times where competition for jobs and further education places is strong, gaining good GCSE grades is more important than ever.

However, young people who may not have received the grades they were expecting should not despair, there are still options to consider. Connexions Advisors can help you through the next steps.”

"An eight per cent gap remains between levels of achievement in the two-tier system compared with the three-tier system.

"This gap cannot continue and we must work to complete the School Organisation Review as soon as we possibly can. We must remove all barriers that stop young people reaching their full potential.”
