Four-way fight to fill town council vacancy

Monday, 16th September 2013.

Nominations have now closed for the by-election to fill the vacancy on Haverhill Town Council caused by the resignation of the former Conservative group leader Bryan Hawes.

It will be a four-way fight on Thursday, October 10, in the Haverhill North ward, with Conservatives and Labour being joined by UKIP and an Independent, all four of them Haverhill residents.

The Conservative candidate, who will be aiming to retain the seat because, although Mr Hawes had left the party before he resigned, he was elected in 2011 as a Conservative, is Chris Wheatley, of Bramble Close.

Labour, who have slender control of the town council, are putting up Lorraine Mary Weston of Moneypiece Close.

Mr Hawes had just joined UKIP when he resigned, and the vacancy is to be filled by an election at the request of ten electors, the requirement by law for an election to be held, which will give UKIP a chance of being represented.

The town recently elected two UKIP members among the three Suffolk county councillors it sends to Ipswich, and the party decided to push for an election and prevent the usual co-option by agreement of a new councillor from the same party as the one who had left.

UKIP has selected Barry Frank Robbins of Broad Street as its candidate.

The fourth contender is Independent Frankie Boyle of Elm Close.
