Fraudster's chance to pay off £67,000 debts

Thursday, 16th September 2004.

A FRAUDSTER may escape jail after a court was told he was trying to clear his £67,000 debts.

David Sutton, of Grenadier Road, Haverhill, was due to be sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court by Judge John Holt.

But sentence was deferred for three months after the judge heard that Sutton was making efforts to clear debts of about £67,000.

In July, Sutton, 30, was convicted of 16 deception charges which involved trying to con High Street banks out of tens of thousands of pounds.

The prosecution said that Sutton pretended someone had got hold of his personal details and was spending money in his name.

Sutton's barrister, Julian Christopher, said his client did not believe he had acted dishonestly but accepted that they were all his debts.

Mr Christopher said Sutton had turned to a financial consultant to help him clear his debts. He was working for a high-tech firm, earning up to £4,000 a month.

Jail would make it impossible for him to clear the debts.

Judge Holt deferred sentence until December 13 to see how the debt repayment would work out.

He said it might not be necessary to impose a jail term.
