Free bags for those who love Haverhill market

Tuesday, 7th February 2012.

Free sturdy market bags are being given to Haverhill market-lovers on Friday, February 17, to celebrate St Valentine’s Day and a great Haverhill institution.

The flat-bottomed jute bags, which are ideal for carrying perishable goods, are available free from stallholders until stocks run out.

Cllr Robert Everitt, St Edmundsbury Borough Council's cabinet member for community services, said: “Changing shopping habits mean people are proudly replacing disposable bags with one they use all the time and, with many rediscovering Haverhill market’s traditional, personal service, a good strong market bag is ideal for putting all the locally-sourced produce in.

"I am sure that these free bags will be seen on the town’s streets for a long time to come.”

The 1,000 specially designed jute bags contain a seasonal soup recipe using ingredients readily found on the market.

Rejuvenating and supporting the market is one of the borough council's main policies in pursuing the goal of improving Haverhill town centre's retail offer.
