Future tennis stars take to the courts

Wednesday, 3rd October 2012.

Haverhill Tennis Club held its first county tour red mini event of the winter season on Saturday with ten children taking part in an eight and under event.

The standard was very high, with these young children serving over head and hitting with topspin on many of their shots.

The emphasis is on fun, participation and learning to promote the enjoyment of tennis. The children certainly enjoyed themselves while their parents supported everyone that took part.

Joshua Mumford (Lavenham) and Josh Izod were first and second in their group and Saul Hindmarch (Holbrook) and Harry Bird qualified from their group.

Sam Fowle (Haverhill) was again unlucky not to come through the group stages and losing 10-8 in his final game pushed him down to third place.

Joshua won his semi-final 10-3 against Harry and Josh Izod just beat Saul in a very close match 12-10. Third place went to Harry who narrowly beat Saul 10-8.

Joshua Mumford won the final 10-4 against Josh Izod to win his second consecutive competition at Haverhill in the last month.

A very special mention must go to the club juniors for giving up their time to umpire the games Nicole Pike, Tristram Walsh, Ross Tobin and the coach Joshua Dashwood.
