Genzyme team helps out at hospice

Friday, 13th August 2010.

A team of over 20 employees of Genzyme in Haverhill, along with their friends and family, have served as volunteers at the St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds on two separate occasions recently.

Together, the team volunteered over 160 hours staining windows and gardening.

As a result the Hospice has been awarded a G.I.V.E grant of more than £2,500 as part of Genzyme’s Global Volunteer Programme – Genzyme Invests in Volunteer Efforts (G.I.V.E) - which inspires its employees worldwide to volunteer for initiatives in their local communities.

This was a tremendous effort by everyone and the team’s work was gratefully received by staff and residents.

The grant will go to very good use, providing palliative care to those in the west of Suffolk and in Thetford with terminal illnesses.

Sue Palmer, purchasing officer and community relations officer at Genzyme, said: "It was amazing that we achieved so much in such a short space of time.

"Colleagues, friends and families put in a tremendous effort - from tea-making to drain-clearing the team work was wonderful. A few hours of our time was a small sacrifice for the sense of achievement we had at the end of the day.”

St Nicholas’ Hospice corporate fund raiser Abby Hunt said: “We are always delighted when a team from Genzyme volunteers at the Hospice. The dedication and hard work each individual shows is incredible and much appreciated. We would like to thank everyone who has given up their time this year and provided an invaluable service.”
