Gifts to aid work of district nurses

Thursday, 4th April 2002.

District Nurses at Haverhill have received valuable equipment from the grateful daughter of a former patient.

Marian Harrison, of Forties Close, Haverhill, handed over equipment worth around £550 to district nurse Cindy Barry and her colleagues.

Mrs Harrison said she was particularly grateful for their care of her late father Leonard Smith before his death last October.

“When my dad was ill he came down from Hackney and they were there on the day he arrived. They came to see him every day and he really bucked up for a while, they were fantastic with him.

“When I saw what the nurses did I wanted to help. They do a marvellous job, but if they haven’t got the equipment they need, it is more difficult.”

Mrs Harrison is no stranger to fundraising, the cash she used to buy the two blood pressure metres and a Dopplex machine came from one of the discos she and her husband Gerry have organised over the past five years.

The organise three functions a year for up to 200 people and have raised a total of £3,500 for various charities, mostly in Haverhill.

Mrs Harrison said: “It started for my 50th birthday party when everyone enjoyed themselves so much they wanted me to hold another one. I decided to ask them to make donations to charity and I try to keep the town.”

Cindy Batty said they were very grateful for the equipment, which would make life easier for nurses. The Doppliex machine helps detect ulcers and will be particularly valuable for the team.

Mrs Batty said: “This will make life much easier for us.”

CAPTION: Valuable gift ... two blood pressure monitors and a Dopplex are presented by Marian Harrison, second from left, to Cindy Batty, district nurse siste, Allison Cracknell, community nurse and Lynda Keppel, community nurse.
