Girl, 14, raped in town alleyway

Monday, 19th July 2010.

A teenage girl has been left traumatised after being raped in Haverhill three weeks ago, a police spokesman has said.

Police are appealing for information after the 14-year-old reported summoned up the courage to report the attack yesterday (Sunday).

The girl was walking alone along Greenfields Way towards Headland Avenue at around 5.50pm on a weekday evening when a male approached, asked her for a light and started chatting.

He then assaulted her and pulled her into an alleyway where he raped her. The male left on foot.

The incident was reported to police yesterday and the girl has been spoken to by specially-trained police officers.

The girl has described her attacker as a white male, around 6ft 3in tall, bald, with stubble and bloodshot eyes and had a Union Jack tattoo on one of his upper arms.

He was wearing black tracksuit bottoms and a beige vest.

Work is being carried out to establish exactly where the incident occurred and house to house inquiries will be undertaken in due course.

Det Insp Andy Footer said: “The female is extremely traumatized by this incident and has been very brave in coming forward to report this.

"As the attack occurred some weeks ago it is imperative that we speak to anyone who was in the area at the time as soon as possible, and I urge anyone who has any information which could assist with this inquiry to contact West Suffolk CID without delay.”

Anyone with any information in relation to this incident should call West Suffolk CID on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
