Golden girls strike again

Thursday, 21st June 2001.

JEMMA Thake, Jo Chapman, Anna Clayton and Chris Knox were all again on hand to bring home the gold for West Suffolk Athletic Club as the foursome pipped their rivals to the post to grab all the glory at the Anglian Schools Championships in Bury St Edmunds.

Thake sped home in a winning time of 41.1secs in the 300m event, while edging past team-mate Louisa Wells to take the 200m gold in 25.7secs.

Her success has landed Thake a place in the Suffolk Schools squad which is to compete in the English Schools Championships next month.

But second best is what Wells had to experience once again on the track, as Cambridgeshire's Louise Hazel beat her rival to take the 100m crown. However, a life-line has been thrown Wells way as both her times were inside the English Schools Qualifying (ESQ) boundaries, resulting in selection for the sprinter.

Jo Chapman smashed last year's javelin record by three metres. Her throw of 40m 47cms is expected to land her a spot in the Suffolk Schools squad for next month. Anna Clayton was another West Suffolk member to repeat last year's good fortunes, as a leap of 5m 30cms landed her the top gong and a place in the Suffolk squad. Clayton added the bronze award in the 80m hurdles with a time of 12.5secs.

Chris Knox took the gold in the high jump. Knox collected his third successive ESQ level victory with a jump of 1m 90cms. West Suffolk will also take junior high-jumpers Tania Spurling (1m 58cms) and Wendy Meadows-Smith (1m 55secs) to the championships in Exeter, as they both achieved the required standard, despite having to settle for second and third.

Wells, Thake and Clayton joined up with Ipswich Harriers Louise Morgan for the Suffolk Inter-Girls relay 400m, coming home first in 50.2 secs, just one fifth of a second outside the ESQ.

Josh Parkington was the final medal winner for West Suffolk Athletic Club, as his time of 51.7 secs earnt him a place on the top of the podium, in the 400m.
