Golf club pro through to quarter-finals

Tuesday, 11th May 2010.

Haverhill Golf Club head professional Paul Wilby is through to the next round of the Suffolk Professional Winter Matchplay, after beating Halesworth professional Richard Davies at Bury Golf Club on Friday, May 7.

Wilby fought back after being 3 down after 11 to win 1 up. He now meets Tim Cooper from Newton Green in the quarter-finals.

Trevor Broomfield scored an ace on the par three, 118-yard second hole, using a pitching wedge during one of Haverhill’s friendly club events, The Tuesday Hoot - it was celebrations all round when he got back to the clubhouse!

The ladies match against Flempton on Monday, April 26, resulted in a home win for the Haverhill team by 2½-1½.

On Saturday, May 1, and Wednesday, May 5, the ladies May medals were contested and the results were as follows: May 1 - 1 Sally Price 107-32-75; 2 Jackie Condon 96-20-76; 3 Mary Sail 95-16-79. May 5 - 1 Sue Carr 86-15-71; 2 Sally Price 99-26-73; 3 Doreen Darbey 102-28-74.

Haverhill junior Lewis Whiting made his debut representing the club in the Curry Cup at home against Five Lakes. He won both his foursomes match, partnering Terry Lyons (5&3) in the morning, and his singles match in the afternoon (2&1).

It was the first match in Haverhill’s campaign to defend the Curry Cup, which they won in September 2009. The results for the morning matches were: Eamonn Bareham & Gerry Scott lost 5&4 to J Lewins & M Pook, Lee Chandler and Dave Perrett won 9&8 against M Bewers & M Ponder, Jack Warwick & Harvey Bavester won 2&1 against P Bowers & J Eddalls, Terry Lyons & Lewis Whiting won 5&3 against T Cook & C Southgate, Kim Ward & Ted Fairhead won 8&7 against D Chignell & A Dobson and Andy Craig & Graham Ashcroft won 2&1 against N Popper & G Doherty.

The afternoon matches were very close with six points awarded to each team. The results were: Jack Warwick lost 3&2 to J Lewins, Dave Perrett won 1 up against M Ponder, Lee Chandler won 2 up against P Bowers, Gerry Scott lost 1 down to M Pook, Harvey Bavester lost 2&1 to M Bewers, Eamonn Bareham halved against J Eddalls, Andy Craig lost 2&1 to T Cook, Lewis Whiting won 2&1 against A Dobson, Terry Lyons won 5&3 against G Doherty, Ted Fairhead won 5&4 against D Chignell, Kim Ward halved against C Southgate and Graham Ashcroft lost 3 down to N Popper.

The final result was an 11-7 win for Haverhill, who are drawn away for their next match on June 19 against Fynn Valley.

Father and daughter team Steve and Leah Nichols won the Douglas Bader qualifier played at Haverhill on Sunday, May 9, with a fantastic 45pts.

They go forward to play in the regional final at Ely on August 23. In second place with 43pts were Lee Chandler and Doreen Darbey and in third place with 40pts, Ted and Anna Fairhead on countback from David Roope and Karen Wilby also with 40pts.

The junior medal, played on Sunday, May 9, was won by Lewis Whiting. Continuing his Curry Cup form, Lewis had another amazing round to finish with a nett 67 and reduce his handicap by a further shot to 16. The results were: 1 Lewis Whiting 84-17-67; 2 Liam Merritt 88-16-72; 3 Richard Boyles 91-18-73.

Finally news just in, the Haverhill seniors Parks team have just beaten last year’s winners, Purdis (Ipswich Golf Club) in the first round, away at Purdis on Monday, May 10.

The match was all square at full time and Haverhill just managed to win the play-off hole. Last year Haverhill lost to Purdis at Diss in the final, so it was a great result for Haverhill, especially having to play the defending champions on their home turf.
