Golfing girls lift top county trophies

Tuesday, 7th September 2010.

Haverhill Golf Club girls lifted two of the three trophies at the annual Suffolk Ladies County Golf Association run the High Handicap Cup for junior girls.

The event was held on Thursday, August 19, and aims to involve as many up and coming young ladies playing golf all around the county.

The competition is divided into three categories - 18-hole Stableford, nine-hole Stableford and six-hole Medal.

Anneka Benson won the six-hile Medal and Alice Iron the nine-hole Stableford, both from the Haverhill club.

Annaka Benson took up golf only one year ago, when she began attending Haverhill Golf Club’s, Sunday morning coaching sessions coached by Ollie Rush.

Since then Annaka has proceeded to become a member of the golf club and has just won her first tournament – claiming victory in the six- hole Medal event with a fantastic score of 36 points, three shots clear of the second place score.

The nine-Hole even was won by Annaka’s fellow Haverhill Golf Club Member, Alice Iron. Alice scored 24 points (six under her handicap) and was five shots clear of the second place score, an amazing achievement only four days after a golf lesson.

Both girls have been regular members of Haverhill Golf Club’s junior golf academy run by head professional Paul Wilby.
