Good weather reflected in course scores

Tuesday, 4th October 2011.

The Men’s IFF Challenge was played at Haverhill Golf Club on Wednesday, September 27 and, with the recent spell of good weather and the excellent condition of the golf course, both factors were reflected in the results.

The winner overall was Haverhill’s junior captain, Richard Boyles, with an impressive score of 71-8-63, and he has now reduced his handicap by a shot to seven.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Richard Boyles 71-8-63; 2 Ellis Brown 80-12-68 on countback; 3 Dave Cohen 80-12-68.

Division Two, 1 Wayne Smith 83-16-67 on countback; 2 Allen O’Donoghue 84-17-67; 3 Stuart King 83-14-69.

Division Three, 1 Chris Powell 93-24-69; 2 John Fox 99-28-71 on countback; 3 Paul Mower 97-26-71.

Haverhill Men played in a friendly match against The Suffolk at home on Saturday, October 1, the format better ball, Hambro scoring.

The host team, comprising club captain Keith Brown, vice-president David Chapman, Frank Gooch, Andy Fish, Richard Parker, Joe Davis, Michael Fowler, Paul Bartlett, Eamonn Bareham, Jon Wiseman, Russell Gritty and Derek Olive seized the home advantage to win by nine holes.

The ‘Golf Roots’ Foundation Foursomes was played on Sunday, October 2, the format Stableford with an adult paired with a junior.

In all, 13 pairs took part and the winners were Dave Cohen and Daniel Walker with 42pts. In second place were Ryan Greenwood and Joshua Hulyer with 41pts and in third place, on countback, Pat O’Sullivan and Edward Halpin with 35pts from fourth place John Fox and Hayden Durrant also with 35pts.

The Ladies Medal was played on Saturday, October 1. The scores were very close, however it was Jane Herrington who just clinched first prize on countback with a score of 99-28-71. In second place was Linda Macfarlane also with 98-27-71 and in third place Gerry Wheatley with 94-22-72.

Haverhill’s Peter Garner and Keith Donno reached the Regional Finals of the Howdidido National Matchplay Championship 2011.

The pair had qualified through three previous matches having beaten pairs from Gog Magog, St Ives and Burghley Park. Peter and Keith were drawn to play at Brampton Park on Saturday, September 24, against a pair from Brampton Park.

Their opponents, Simon Barns, playing off a handicap of two and Stuart Miller, playing off a handicap of six, proved too strong for the Haverhill pair, who unfortunately lost the match 4&3.

Paul Houchen and Andy Fish took part in the National Final of the International Pairs at Wychwood Park, Cheshire on Friday, September 30.

Sadly they didn’t manage to repeat the form they had shown in the practice round the previous day, but Andy stated: "The set-up for the final was tough and there was no room for error, on a course over 7,000 yards off the whites. The quality of the golf course and venue at Wychwood was second to none and we very much enjoyed the experience."

Haverhill member Dave Quinney won the Gog Magog Club Championship (Woodhead Cup) on Sunday, September 25. Quinney, who is also a member at The Gogs, had to pre-qualify the previous weekend for the top 16, who then progressed into the matchplay draw.

The first two stages of the knockout matches were played on Saturday, September 24, and he made it through to the semi-finals to be played the following day.

After a very close match in his semi-final, winning on the 19th, Quinney went onto meet Steve Jarvis in the final, where he claimed overall victory by just 1up. Quinney completed the hat-trick as he has won this event three years in succession.
