Goodman tells Rovers to be more ruthless

Thursday, 11th October 2001.

PAUL Goodman wants Haverhill Rovers to be more ruthless after their 2 – 0 win over Cornard on Saturday in Jewson League Division One at Hamlet Croft.

The victory maintained Rover’s unbeaten league record and their place at in the higher echelons of the table.

Strikes by Adrian Hunt and Mark Brandt earned three points but that was not enough to satisfy Rover’s manager Goodman.

He said: “We just need to sharpen up a bit in front of goal. We created several chances but we were not ruthless enough in front of goal.

“They put us under pressure early on and Dave Walton had to make some good saves – he made two superb stops.

In the second half we put them under a lot of pressure. They had a free-kick which was heading for the top corner but Dave managed to get a finger to it.”

Right wing-back Hunt gave Rovers the lead in the 20th minute and striker Brandt doubled the advantage from the penalty spot 10 minutes later.

“One of their players just handled it,” said Goodman. “He was not really under any pressure.” His arm came up and it was difficult for the referee not to give it.”

Chris Clayden was sidelined but James Catten was on his way back to full fitness – he has had knee and back problems.

Goodman said: “He came through a reserve-team game and he’s getting stronger. He’s got a few problems – I think they attributed most of it to his lower back. He’s just got to get sharp.
