Haverhill – Burglars disturbed by resident

Thursday, 7th April 2016.

Police are appealing for witnesses after burglars were disturbed leaving a house in Haverhill at the weekend.

The break-in took place between 3pm and 3.10pm on Saturday 2 April at an address in Mustards Gapp.

The victim was returning home when he encountered a dark grey Mercedes parked in the road near to his house. As he approached in his vehicle, this car turned around to face the victim’s car and he was able to see two people in the front of the vehicle and one in the back.

Two men then appeared in the road coming from the direction of the victim’s house carrying a safe which he immediately recognised as his. The victim got out of his car and challenged the men, who placed the safe in the boot of the Mercedes before getting in the back of the car.

The vehicle then drove off despite the victim’s attempts to stop it and headed in the direction of Manor Road. Entry had been gained to the house by smashing a rear patio door and the stolen safe contained a quantity of cash and jewellery.

Anyone who saw a car matching this description, or who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area, is asked to contact Bury St Edmunds CID on 101 quoting reference 25792/16, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
