Haverhill Angling Club news

By Rupert Beynon on Tuesday, 22nd June 2010.

Haverhill angler Danny Porter recently represented the club at the latest qualifier of fish-o-mania, which was held at Willinghurst fishery in Surrey.

Danny drew an unfancied Johns Lake and after the draw stood at his swim not knowing how to fish his open water peg.

Fortunately for him, a local to the lakes told him of a submerged island in the middle of the lake, so that made Danny's mind up to fish from the start an 8mm pellet using a method feeder which was moulded with micro pellets, over the area described.

With experienced anglers all around fishing the pole, including two-time finalist Steve "Wacko" Jackson, Danny was up against it.

Catching steadily throughout the match it was close between him and Steve Jackson but with ten minutes to go Danny landed a 12lb common carp to see him finally weigh in with 55lb, winning his lake and coming a very respectable sixth overall on the day.

The winner though, going through to the final with a chance of winning £25,000, was Stuart Ballard with 68lb.

A recent club match held at Clare's top lake was a different kettle of fish. The match was a pairs match but the cool northerly wind had a dramatic effect on the fish with only a few carp showing and many anglers not even getting a bite the whole match.

Jason Jeggo managed to catch a duck - fortunately no harm came to him or the feathered friend.

Winners on the day were Peter Griggs and Michael Potter with just two carp for 10lb 2oz. Second with 8lb 7oz were Phil Kingdom and Jason Jeggo, and third were Cyril Mayes and Neil Foster with 3lb 15oz. The next match will take place at Home Farm, Little Walden on Saturday, July 3, draw at midday.
