Haverhill bowls player trials for England

Thursday, 14th October 1999.

Greg Nash is from the Haverhill Indoor Bowling Club, and is the first Haverhill player to be given an England trial at under 25 level. Greg lives in Cornard and works as a greenkeeper for Stoke by Nayland golf club.
Liberty Trophy
Suffolk 131, Warwickshire 113
In a nail biting finish Suffolk finally killed off the challenge of Warwickshire in the first round of the Liberty Trophy winning by 18 shots. At one stage of the match played at Lawson Park, Bedford, Suffolk had held a 27 shot advantage, but the Warwicks team hit back in the final third of the match and at one stage went into a one shot lead. Renowned for their capitulation in the past Suffolk hit back hard and were deservedly rewarded with victory.
Rednall, Kennedy, Poole and Rumsby kept their remarkable record and produced another fine set performance winning by 10 shots.
The Brandon set of Morter, Fox, Wellington and Chalk had a close battle with Moon, but always held the upper hand to score a four shot victory. Another new set that of Stuart Gaught, of the Risbygate club, celebrating his 16th birthday, Phil Last, Greg Nash and Mark Royal were Suffolk's highest winning rink with a 28-17 win over Steve Taylor. Gaught and Nash will be taking part in the England Under 25s trials at the end of November and after their performance on Saturday will have every chance of making the squad. Mark Royal is already a full Under 25 international
Although losing on three rinks the Suffolk rinks to go down kept their opponents very tight and Gathercole's rink might feel themselves unlucky to have lost on the final end. Martin Rumball and Andrew Friend both had very good games in their respective sets. Rumball's rink going down by four and Friend's by two.
In the next round to be held on Saturday, November 27, Suffolk will play Lancashire who had a surprisingly comfortable victory over Cumbria.
