Haverhill Echo editor dies

Thursday, 13th June 2002.

John Berroll, who was editor of the Haverhill Echo for 21 years, has died at the age of 65.

Mr Berrill lived at Cavendish and Glemsford during his 32 years in Suffolk, after moving from his native Northamptonshire.

He left the Echo in 1991 and worked for another seven years editing the Suffolk Free Press in Sudbury before taking early retirement.

Even after his retirement he continued working part-time on both papers as well as the Bury Free Press and Newmarket Journal.

Mr Berrill leaves Pam, the mother of his three grown-up children Simon, Sally and Julian, grandchildren Melissa, 10, and Rosanna, eight, and Tessa Collins, his partner for the last 23 years.

Mr Berrill died in West Suffolk Hospital after a short illness last Friday.

His funeral will be held at Our Lady and St John Roman Catholic Church in Sudbury at 10am today.
