Haverhill golfers come through in play-off nailbiter

Tuesday, 22nd February 2011.

On Saturday, February 19, the second round of the men’s Mail on Sunday event was played at Haverhill Golf Club against Bury St Edmunds Golf Club.

Although the day was very wet, the greens were in good condition, however the mud throughout the course made for difficult play from tee to green.

The results were (Haverhill team first): Eamonn Bareham beat Andy Grogan 4&2, Dennis Harkness lost to Graham Smith 4&3, Bob Spittle beat Gareth Davies 3&2, Derek Thomas halved his match with Malcolm Parkinson and Andy Fish lost to Andy Ball by 1 hole.

The match result was 2½ -2½ and forced a play-off between Andy Fish and Andy Ball.

On the first play-off hole, Andy Ball managed to hole a very tricky second putt from across the tiered green to save par and keep the match alive.

On the second, 144-yard par three, Andy Fish’s tee shot was almost an ace. His ball hit the green three inches in front of the pin, climbed the flagstick at pace, came back down and lipped out to 12ft, which he then two putted, allowing Andy Ball to halve the hole.

On the third play-off hole Andy Ball missed the green with his approach shot, which gave Andy Fish the advantage when his approach shot landed within 15ft feet of the pin and his two putt was enough to secure the win.

On Sunday, February 13, Haverhill Golf Club juniors played in their medal event.

Ed Baker shot the lowest gross and won the event with an impressive 79-10-69 and as a result he has reduced his handicap by one shot. Liam Merritt finished in second place with 79-10-69 and James Higham in third place with 101-25-76.

Geraldine Wheatley scored an ace in the Ladies’ February Stableford on Wednesday, February 16. She used a seven wood on the par three, 110-yard eighth hole.

The tournament was another triumph for Mary Sail, with a score of 31pts. In second place was Geraldine Wheatley with 28pts and in third place Jacqueline Condon with 27pts.
