Haverhill open with a victory

Thursday, 6th May 1999.

JAYGATE Homes Two Counties Division Three new boys Haverhill got their season off to a winning start with a four-wicket victory over Long Melford.
Ed Barber took four wickets and captain Mick Rinaldi a couple as Long Melford were skittled out for 133 in 40 overs.
Haverhill had to work hard in reply, but 61 from Bill Moran and Pate Shanks’ 34 helped guide them home with six wickets down.
"It was our first game and an excellent start," said Rinaldi. "We’re very pleased with it."
Elsewhere, Exning got their first division campaign under way in sparkling fashion.
A 209-run victory over Copdock ensured a 20-point haul and gave Exning a share of the first division lead.
An unbeaten third-wicket stand of 226 in just 21 overs between opener Dave Monk (150 not out) and No 4 Matthew Catley (112 not out) was the bedrock of Exning’s 341 for 2, with Tim Catley weighing in with 52.
Copdock managed a third-wicket stand of 96 in their reply, but once that was ended they subsided to 132 all out. Keith Metcalf took 3 for 21 for Exning and Nathan Gage 2 for 32.
Newly-promoted Worlington got off the mark with a low-scoring three-wicket victory over Abberton in Division Two, after losing to Brightlingsea by 41 runs the previous day.
Lakenheath are still waiting for their first win and are bottom of Division Two after losing by eight wickets to Abberton and by six wickets to Harwich.
