Haverhill points machine grinds on

Thursday, 14th September 2000.

THERE is no stopping Haverhill Rugby Club, nor their free-scoring skipper Pete Youngs.
The scorer of 36 tries and nearly 450 points as the club went through last season without a league defeat, Youngs helped himself to 21 points as Haverhill cruised through the first round of the Tetley Bitter Vase with a 41-3 victory over Burnham-on-Crouch.
But despite two tries, four conversions and a sweetly-struck, 40-metre drop goal, he was upstaged by two other Haverhill players.
Graham Lamb was the game’s outstanding player at No 8, while veteran front-row forward Freddy Green received the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the assembled vice presidents when he scored one of his side’s six tries.
Many of the spectators might have been long retired, but most had played in club sides with evergreen Green.
