Haverhill schools set new GCSE records

Thursday, 22nd August 2002.

Pupils at Haverhill schools have set new records in their GCSE exams, with increases at both on last year's figures.

Castle Manor Upper School saw a 17 per cent improvement in its results, taking its students with five A* to C grades to 35 per cent and students with one of more A* to G grade to 99 per cent.

Samuel Ward Upper School saw students with five or more A* to C grades rise by five per cent to 52 per cent, with 100 per cent achieving at least one A* to G grade.

Howard Lay, Headteacher at Samuel Ward Upper School, said he felt the results reflected what was going on in Haverhill, which was very much an expanding town of the new century.

He said: "I am really pleased, and we will do even better next year. I am especially pleased that the boys have done really well and almost caught the girls up.

"It was a year group with a huge number of boys and the teaching methods we put in place to support boys really seem to be paying off."

Julie Winterman, headteacher at Castle Manor, congratulated all students on their successes.

"Staff will be continuing with their efforts to ensure a year-on-year improvement in standards in line with national trends. Girls did better than boys generally, though some of our boys have achieved extremely good results," Mrs Winterman said.

Two Castle Manor student who bucked the trend were Bradley Rice, who got four A*s, three As and four Bs, and Tom Cross, who got six As, two Bs and one C.

"I was predicted a B/C in maths so I was pleased to get an A. I was not so much surprised by my results, just glad it was over. I don't think most boys do work as hard, but there are exceptions," Tom said.

Grace Dawson, also of Castle Manor, got one A*, seven As and two Bs. "It was what I was predicted, so it was what I was expected. I did work very hard and I am really pleased," Grace said.

Other high achievers at the school were Claire Symonds with two A*s, three As and four Bs and Emma Garnham with five As and four Bs.

At Samuel Ward, Rebekah Hounsell of Stoke by Clare got the highest grades with nine A*s and two As, just before moving to Colchester later this week.

She is the youngest of six children, who have all been high achievers, and had a lot to live up to.

"It was a bit of a surprise, but I revised really hard for ages and my poor mother had to put up with me. I want to do something in physics or to be an astronomer," Rebekah said.

Lee House, another Samuel Ward pupil, got six A*s, three As and one B. "It is pretty unbelievable. I had expected to do quite well, but not this well. I did work quite hard," Lee said.
