Haverhill stride to success

Thursday, 27th September 2001.

HAVERHILL Striders made a successful visit to a mile race run by Bury St Edmunds Pacers, despite bad weather conditions. Andrew Graham, 11, was the only youngster there and finished 16th, with a new club record of 5 minutes 59.6 seconds, taking his tally to 16 club records.

He has also been selected to represent the south of England at race walking in an Inter Area match at Birmingham on Saturday (Sep 29). Mabon Dane of Haverhill Striders finished fifth in the event with a time of 5 mins 13 secs and coach Mick Graham set a new club Over Over 50s record with 6 mins 53 secs. Meanwhile, a small number of Haverhill Striders travelled to Woodford, London to contest their last track and field open of the season.

Alex Westdjke, 8, returned a personal best when he ran into second spot in the 200m in 33.Osecs. Paul Graham, 15, faced some tough competition in his 3000m finishing 11 in l0 mins 32 secs.

Mabon Dane had a life times best in the senior men’s 200m, lowering the club record for the third time this year with victory in 26.2secs. Dane followed his 200m win with 2 in the

400m in 59secs. Andrew Graham, 11, running against the wind finished 4 in his 400min 72 secs.

The Striders now have month to prepare for the new x-country season where they will contesting the Suffolk and Royston county leagues.
