Haverhill students create the perfect bin!

Pupils from Chalkstone Middle School in Haverhill are to be handed prizes after helping to spread the word about recycling.
The youngsters, who are in years seven and eight, will each receive a DVD player after taking part in a competition known as the Perfect Bin. The contest has given pupils at 13 schools from across the county the chance to learn more about recycling by making sure the right materials (such as paper, cardboard, plastic and cans) have been placed in their blue bins at home.
The competition works by encouraging the students to sort their loose recyclables. All of the pupils have been given information about what can and can’t be recycled to help them put the correct items in their blue bins. When they are happy their bin is ‘perfect’ (for example, it doesn’t contain any plastic bags), they attach a hanger onto it and put it out for collection. St Edmundsbury’s crews will then check the bins as they complete their rounds. If they are satisfied the recycling bin contains all the right materials, the pupil is entered into a prize draw.
Viridor Waste Management Limited gave St Edmundsbury, alongside the other councils in Suffolk, a £10,000 grant to run the competition.
