Haverhill under 8s tennis players win tournament

Wednesday, 3rd November 2010.

Junior tennis players from Haverhill took part in a mini-tournament, involving eight teams of boys and girls, at Braintree - and ended up winning.

Clubs from Earls Colne, Braintree, Dunmow, Haverhill, Castle Hedingham, Wickham Bishops, and Thaxted entered four mini under eight players into the Sunday morning tournament.

Divided into two groups, each team played three matches against other clubs. Each match comprised of four singles games and two doubles. All games started via the gas horn and lasted five minutes, and whoever was in front at the time of finish was the winner.

It encouraged many of the children how to work as a team as well as teaching them rules and good gameplay. Most of all, what was evident was that every single player had fun playing and competing st tennis, some for the first time.

With the early October morning being sunny and warm, many families came to support and watch their teams, and a great atmosphere was evident with non-stop matches all morning, loads of applause and encouragement.

The final was between Haverhill and Earls Colne, which finished at 3-3 in games so it went to a special play–off which added to the excitement of the day. Haverhill were a point up in the final game when the hooter went off, so well done to them.

In all, it was a fantastic event with over 40 under 8s boys and girls playing and competing tennis in a fun environment, and lets hope Haverhill can find themselves a budding champion among them.

Haverhill Tennis Club has more events planned, again for this age group, but also for the 8/9-year-olds(orange tennis) and 10-year-olds (green).

If anyone is interested in getting the children involved with tennis, simply visit the club's website where they have details of all the tennis clubs in this area with contacts for the coaches.
