HGV strategy set to be approved

Tuesday, 8th October 2002.

LORRY management strategy to reduce problems caused by heavy goods vehicles in Haverhill looks likely to be approved by councillors this week.

The report says that up to a thousand HGVs pass through Haverhill each week.

Weight restrictions on certain roads, more signs to discourage lorries from using residential areas, a park and improvements to the Cangle junction are among the measures proposed.

Members of St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Cabinet, meeting Wednesday, are recommended to approve the findings of a Haverhill Lorry Management Study as part of a local action plan.

Key issues identified include use of residential streets, particularly Crowland Road, Eastern and North Avenue, the Chalkstone Estate, Camps Road and Burton End.

Problems caused by lack of signs to direct lorries on to appropriate routes, lack of parking areas and illegal parking stopping deliveries, especially in the High Street, will also be addressed.

New signs to encourage use of the town’s southern bypass and the creation of industrial zones to help lorries reach their destination are among the options put forward.

A weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes, except for deliveries, would be introduced in Eastern Avenue, North Avenue and Chalkstone Way, as well as Crowland Road, which would become no-entry at its junction with Withersfield Road.

New traffic calming and lorry deterrent measures are also proposed along Burton End, between the bypass and Crowland Road.

A comprehensive new lorry signage strategy would be adopted, with improvements made to The Pightle, Lordscroft Lane, Ehringshausen Way and Bumpstead Road, as the main route for lorries to access the bypass.

It is recommended that extensive consultation is carried out with lorry operators and and the town council to develop a Lorry Partnership and create a workable strategy.
