Hit shot Jenkin leads Rovers revival

Thursday, 3rd January 2002.

TITLE hopefuls Haverhill kept pace with the leaders thanks to a 3 – 1 triumph at Whitton despite going behind early on.

A free kick was headed in by the home side and Rovers keeper Dave Walton needed to make a couple more great saves to stop Whitton adding to their lead.

An own goal gave Haverhill a way back when a defender, under pressure from Mark Brandt, knocked in Paul Jenkin’s pull back from Adie Hunt’s cross.

Jenkin made it 2 –1 before the break with an unstoppable drive from outside the area after a good build up involving Neil Hammond, Derrin Brindley and Ben Cowing.

Neil Cogger was pushed into a forward role by manager Paul Goodman in the second half and he was rewarded after slipping past two defenders before slotting past the keeper.

Walton still needed to produce some heroics between the posts as the home side pushed forward and Goodman rated him man of the match.

He said: “We didn’t really play that well at the start and they deserved to be in the lead.

“But the result was very pleasing. It’s a tough place to go even though they’re down near the bottom and we’re defended very well.

“We just need to keep winning and wait for someone to slip up.”
