Holiday warning about school building sites

Tuesday, 13th July 2010.

Haverhill police have warned of the dangers of buildings sites to youngsters during the school holidays.

With the holidays starting next week, HC Will Wright of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team warned police would take 'robust' action over any anti-social behaviour during the holidays, and particularly around building sites.

"Building sites are dangerous places," he said. "They are fenced off for a reason."

Sites include Greenfields Way, where a replacement school for Clements Primary is being built, School Lane and Camps Road, where extra building work is being done at schools in preparation for the re-organisation to two-tier education.

"These schools are for the town," he said. "The more problems there are the bigger the impact on the community in increased building costs."

The sites have experienced vandalism and nuisance from a range of young people from eight to 16 years old.

"Our gentle warning to people is: If you're caught you will be dealt with robustly," he said. "We are also asking parents to be aware where their children are and what they are doing.

"We don't want to be dealing with things where people should know right from wrong."
