Housing providers' deal will bring 400 new homes

Wednesday, 21st September 2011.

Some 400 new affordable homes are set to be built in Suffolk thanks to a partnership between Havebury Housing, Haverhill's biggest homes provider, and other housing providers and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

A four-year contract has been made between the HCA and the E2 Consortium, which includes Havebury, Orwell Housing Association, Saffron Housing Trust, Freebridge Community Housing and Greenfields Community Housing.

As well as the 401 homes in Suffolk, the consortium will deliver 369 properties in Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, supported by a grant of just under £14m from the HCA. The deal is one of the first across England to be completed through the agency’s new Affordable Homes Programme for 2011-2014.

Havebury chief executive Karen Mayhew said: “We are delighted that we can help to provide such a large number of new affordable homes. This agreement will significantly improve affordable housing provision in the area, where average house prices have been recorded as 11 times the average salary.

“Of the 770 total homes, around 30 per cent will be provided in rural locations, and the agreement will also deliver around 25 homes for sale for people with learning disabilities.”

She added: “The success of the E² Consortium clearly demonstrates the strength and benefits of local, medium-sized registered providers working together with a shared commitment to providing high quality, affordable homes for people in need. We look forward to continuing to work with the HCA in delivering these homes over the next four years.”

The HCA’s Affordable Homes Programme is set to deliver 80,000 new affordable homes across England by 2015.

HCA Executive director for the East and South East Terry Fuller said: “We will be working closely with the E2 Consortium and our local authority partners to ensure these much-needed homes are delivered to meet the needs of local people.”

He added: “While some of the investment will directly support existing or known developments, a large part is indicative. The focus will now be on ensuring that people in East Anglia see the benefits of government investment over the next four years.”

Across the HCA’s East and South East operational area, the Affordable Homes Programme could bring approximately £230m of investment to help build around 16,000 new homes by 2014.
