Hunt goes on for Male Rape Attackers

Thursday, 21st November 2002.

SPECIALLY trained officers are comforting a traumatised male rape victim at Haverhill, as the hunt continues for his attackers.

The 30-year-old victim was grabbed and raped by at least two men in the Jubilee Walk and Brooke Service Road area of the town as he walked to a cash machine in the early hours of yesterday morning. Police cordoned off the area to carry out a search.

The incident comes only five weeks after a 41-year-old woman was raped on the town's Clements Estate as she put out her rubbish, and follows an earlier incident when a man attempted to rape a woman at a primary school.

Detective Inspector Andy Henwood, who is leading the investigation, said trained officers were still interviewing the victim and trying to get as much information from him as possible.

He was particularly keen to speak to three men seen in the area, but could not be sure at this stage exactly how many people carried out the attack.

"It is a very sensitive investigation and the victim is still traumatised," he said. "It is unusual for this sort of crime to be reported to us. There have been 13 reported in Suffolk in the past four years. Only recently we held a seminar to talk about this particularly nasty crime and to encourage people to report it."

"Suffolk is still a very safe place to live and we would just advise the public to take normal sensible precautions, to let people know where they are going, and to travel in company when they can," Det Insp Henwood added.

Three men seen by the victim as he made his way to the cash machine are described as white, possibly wearing black caps and one wearing a tartan scarf.

Police would like to speak to them or anyone else who was in the area between 11pm and 1.30am on (01284) 774475.
