Improved buses win passengers

Thursday, 14th October 1999.

AN IMPROVED bus service is proving to be just the ticket for passengers living in South Cambridgeshire.
The number of people using the 113 service - which runs from Haverhill to Cambridge via Addenbrooke's Hospital - has increased by around 60 per cent since it was enhanced in January.
Stagecoach Cambus, which operates the service, increased the number of buses on the route after the Government made money available for rural bus services.
Philip Eden, managing director, said: "The frequency of the service has been increased from one bus every hour to one every half hour, and every 20 minutes during peak times and we have had an amazing response from passengers.
"The number of people using it has increased dramatically and we are now having to look at replacing the single decker vehicles with double deckers at the busiest times."
John Batchelor, South Cambridgeshire district councillor for Linton, said: "This is a very busy route and Linton is a pressure point, particularly at rush hour.
"A lot of people are looking for alternatives to car travel and have welcomed the chance to use the bus now it's running more frequently.
"Anything to help reduce the number of vehicles on the roads will help us all round."
Stagecoach Cambus has been nominated for the Bus Industry Local Authority Marketing Institute Award for the 113 service.
