Inspectors praise high standards

STAFF and pupils at St Felix Roman Catholic Primary School in Haverhill are celebrating an outstanding OFSTED report.

The school has also recently been awarded an Excellence Award from the Department of Education and Science for maintaining very high standards in SATS tests over the last three years. It has also gained “Investors in People” status.

OFSTED inspectors visiting the school in June praised very good leadership and management by head teacher Colin Rawlins, his staff and school governors, which promoted continuing high standards for pupils.

Inspectors commented that standards in English, mathematics, science and music has risen to a high level. They attributed this to major strengths in teaching and learning throughout the school. Of lessons observed, 79 per cent were good or better. They also said that 29 per cent were either good or excellent.

“They very good attitudes of the pupils to school, their behaviour and personal growth have an impact on the very good relationships observed in the school.

“Provision for the spiritual, moral and social development of the pupils is good overall, and very good in the spiritual aspect, and very good in the spiritual aspect, which promotes a calm atmosphere that is conducive to learning,” the report says.

Parental involvement in the school was also praised, but areas which could be improved included aspects of teaching writing skills and assessment procedures in some subjects.

Mr Rawlins, who joined the school just after its last inspection in 197, welcomed the report. He said: “We look forward to developing still further and going from strength to strength.
