Kids up against clock

Thursday, 16th August 2001.

THERE was a Race Against Time for youngsters in a park in Haverhill.

The adventure event was staged by East Town Park for children aged seven to 11 and challenged the youngsters problem-solving abilities.

Colin Jakes, ranger at the park, said: "We had a really good day and all the kids went away with ear-to-ear grins so I think they enjoyed themselves."

The event was so popular that a second Race Against Time was organised, taking place on Friday.

Mr Jakes said: "Race Against Time was devised to run along similar lines to the old TV show Crystal Maze.

"But instead the kids collected gold fir cones which were dotted around the park.

They had to solve particular problems in order to progress to the next stage.

"They also made a rope and wood bridge to get back across the stream. Most were successful. A few got wet - but only the ones that wanted to.

CAPTION: Adventure ... children consult a map while others collect pieces of wood to build a bridge as part of the challenges during Race Against Time.
