Late equaliser denies Rovers a top win

By by Steven Esdale at Hamlet Croft on Monday, 8th February 2010.

RIDGEONS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: Haverhill Rovers 1 Kirkley and Pakefield 1, match report.

Haverhill pulled off their second good result against a top five side as they were held to a draw by a 90th minute Kirkley equaliser.

Kirkley were unlucky not to lead into half-time, Russell Stock having a hard shot cleared off the post by Scott Wilby after a scramble following a corner.

Just before the half-time whistle sounded a goal kick by home keeper Matt Morrison went straight to Christopher Henderson, whose first time ball forward released Nathan Stone to flick the ball wide of Morrison but also inches away from the far right post.

After losing influential captain Marcus Hunt on 49 minutes, the hosts took the lead on 69 minutes after a shot by Shaun Banham from the edge of the area was parried by goalkeeper Robert Woodcock.

Lee Salmons chased the ball wide of the goal in the penalty area, had his arm pulled back by Tarran Grint and Stuart Wardley thumped home the resultant spot kick.

Stone again fired inches wide of the upright, this time the far left post after a positive 40 yard diagonal run, and Henderson had a drive from the edge of the area turned away from the bottom left corner by Morrison before Stock rose above everyone else to meet a corner swinging in to goal and head it into the net to level the match late on.

ROVERS : Matt Morrison, Paul Abbott, Danny Shipton, Stuart Wardley, Sam Holmes, Marc Abbott, Scott Wilby, Marcus Hunt, Lee Salmons, Shaun Banham, Louis Harper.
Subs : Jamie Challis, Harry Halls (for Lee Salmons, 79), Martin Westcott (for Louis Harper, 65), Stuart Kingham (for Marcus Hunt, 49).
