Laura leads relay aces to top show

Thursday, 8th November 2001.

WEST Suffolk’s young athletes enjoyed a super day out when they took on England’s finest in the AAA at Birmingham.

The three athletes who were so successful in the South of England Road Relays at Aldershot, came home seventh out of the 64 teams who had entered the competition.

Laura Dowsing again took the first leg and romped home in the lead after docking 8 mins 34 for the second fastest time of the day, just eight seconds behind the best.

Stephanie Ensten ran the second leg in nine min’s, 45 secs after which the team was in fifth position. First year runner Megan O’Hare took over and ran a fine leg docking nine min’s, 32 to go into seventh spot.

This was the club’s first venture into road races at such a high level but with results like this it is unlikely to be the last. A day later a number of athletes took part in the Icknield League which was held at Arrington.

There were just two under 13s, both of them boys. Jack Cator finished well up in ninth position and his teammate Michael Cripps 14th.

The best contested race, as far as West Suffolk was concerned, was the under 15 girls
in which they had five runners.

Natasha Barnes-Smith and Sara Bird (fifth) enjoyed their own battle for the second time this season with Natasha coming out on top taking an excellent third place overall.

Claire McCusker put in a very promising performance finishing 12th, ahead of Tuna Spurling and KrystieAnne Green who also had their own private race in 15th and 16th, Tania edging it in an exciting sprint finish.

The under 17 girls raced in the same event as the seniors and veterans in this league West Suffolk had three athletes in the race. Under 17 Sani Gaskel took 31st spot followed by veteran Angie Alstrachen in 32 and Heather Stafford 36.

West Suffolk’s only representatives in the joint race for under 15 and under 17 boys were under 15 Sam Distou who was seventh overall and under 17 Peter Fellinghat who finished eighth. Seb Palmer again ran well in the junior and senior men’s race to take 20th place overall ahead of Stefan Keymer who was 47th.
