Leaders succumb to Thake and Co...

Thursday, 17th August 2000.

WEST Suffolk Athletic Club strengthened their bid for promotion from Division Four of the Southern Womens League when they beat runaway leaders Muswell Hill North London in their own back yard.
North London had appeared unbeatable this season with clear wins in each of their previous three fixtures, but in this match was extremely close and West Suffolk eventually won by three points, with both sides finishing well clear of Tonbridge and Tower Hamlets.
Clare’s Jemma Thake enjoyed the London air, with victories in the under-15 100m (12.8 secs), long jump (4.67m) and 200m (26.6 secs). The English Schools medallist also enjoyed success in the 4x100m when she anchored the team to victory.
Marilyn Annes and Dawn Mason won their their respective hammer events, while Anna Clayton took second in the A long jump and Sue Turley won the B string.
Turley also won the 400m hurdles with a time of 72.9secs, while, in the under-15s, Tania Spurling and Becca Hargreaves took a high jump double.
The result sees West Suffolk leap up to second with 785 points, 73 ahead of Loughton.
With the top three gaining promotion, this is West Suffolk’s best chance of getting out of the division they have occupied since joining the league. They have been close for the last four years, but one last push at Ware on September 2 should see them home.
This weekend is another busy one in local athletics, and West Suffolk’s resources will be severely stretched.
On Sunday they host the last East Anglian League match of the season before the League Trophy final at the West Suffolk Arena on September 17.
West Suffolk’s senior women will be hoping for a place in that final, but a number of influential athletes will be away with the Suffolk team at the Southern Inter-Counties Championship in London.
The under-15s will also be badly affected by the finals of the Millenium Youth Games which are currently under way at Southampton.
