Leisure centre gets baking for Children in Need

Monday, 11th November 2013.

Haverhill Leisure Centre will hold a bake off this week to raise money for Children In Need.

Staff will be baking up a storm all week for colleagues and customers. All staff have been invited to bake something to share and customers will then be able to give donations for Children In Need for the finished baked goodies in the cafe.

On Children In Need day on Friday staff will be keeping customers warm by handing out hot soup for Children In Need for swimmers, gym and class goers in exchange for donations to the children’s charity.

While others are cooking up the calories, the gym staff will be burning them off in a challenge to row the equivalent of the English Channel and back in one day. The staff will be rowing the distance of the Channel (26 miles 42.5 km) in exchange for donations and sponsorship.

There will also be a Children In Need Everest Challenge, run by the Explore Outdoor team. A 7.3m climbing wall will be set up outside the Centre and customers and staff will be attempting to reach the height of Mount Everest.

The target is to clock a combined 8,848m on the climbing wall, that means reaching the top of the wall 1,212 times.

The climbing is free and open to everyone for a small donation to support BBC Children in Need.

James Purkiss, centre manager, said: “The Great British Bake-Off is such a popular programme and we have many members of staff who are very proud of their baking skills that we thought it about time that we had a Haverhill Bake-Off.

“We have supported Children in Need every year here at Haverhill Leisure Centre and it is a very popular cause with staff and customers.”
