Looking for leads in hunt for lead thieves

Tuesday, 23rd March 2010.

Police are asking people to look out for anyone out and about at night in Haverhill who appears to be carrying a very heavy bag.

Thefts of lead from premises in Haverhill High Street have now spread to private houses in the north-west area of the town.

Overnight on Monday to Tuesday last week lead was stolen from the roof of a charity shop and a door was damaged, and also from the roof of a jewellers, both in High Street.

Later in the week, probably on Wednesday night, two homes in Chaplains Close had lead flashing stolen from their bay windows.

Police say the thieves would have needed a vehicle to transport the lead and a bag to carry it in, and it would obviously be a heavy load.

They also re-iterated last week's warning about not leaving back gates open so that people can easily get close to the house.

If anyone saw anything at the time around the Chaplains Close area they can call Sgt Sarah Bartley at the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Calls in relation to this High Street incident should be made to PC Carl Edley at Haverhill Police on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Also later in the week there were thefts of metal from premises on Haverhill industrial estate.
