Lorry driver escapes from blazing cab

Monday, 6th June 2011.

A lorry driver had a lucky escape after a blazing car smashed into his cab where he was asleep in the early hours of Friday morning.

The incident happened in Homefield Road, Haverhill, at around 1am when joyriders set fire to a black VW Golf on the industrial estate.

It then rolled into a parked lorry which also caught fire. The lorry driver was asleep in his cab, but he was awakened by a bang and managed to escape. He was shaken but unhurt.

Both the car and lorry cab were destroyed. The car had been stolen from Abington earlier in the evening.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen any suspicious persons or vehicles in the industrial area in the early hours of Friday morning.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to PC Cheryl Claydon at Haverhill Police on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
