Man, 41, took his own life

Thursday, 23rd May 2002.

A taxi driver killed himself with an overdose of tablets on the day he was due to appear in court, an inquest heard.

Greater Suffolk Coroner Peter Dean recorded a suicide verdict on Andrew Massie, 41, of Crowland Road, Haverhill, who died last October.

The inquest heard that Mr Massie left his laptop computer switched on with a message on it saying he was going to take his own life.

A statement was read out from his 12-year-old son Stephen, who had found his father dead in bed.

Rita Grace, Mr Massie's mother, told the inquest he had been very worried about going to court and what might happen to him. Although in good general health, her son had a drink problem, but refused to get help to deal with it.

Pc Terry Bennington said he had found a box of co-proxymal tablets next to Mr Massie with 54 missing.

Dr Dean said Mr Massie obviously had some real anxiety about the court case and he recorded a verdict that Mr Massie took his own life.

Police said Mr Massie had been due to appear in court on a charge of causing actual bodily harm.
