Man arrested in child porn raid

Thursday, 8th November 2001.

A HAVERHILL man was arrested in an early morning raid on his home as part of a nationwide operation against child porn.

The 33-year-old man was one of 15 arrested last week in Operation Barcela, involving 11 forces across the UK and Ireland.

The Metropolitan Police’s Clubs and Vices, Obscene Publications and Internet Unit launched the investigation focusing on people using the internet to distribute indecent images of children.

Chief Inspector Chris Bradford, who headed the operation, said it showed that the people who are committing these offences could not hide behind the anonymity of technology.

He said: “This is an excellent example of the Met’s continuing work to track down those who are involved in the making and distributing of indecent images of children.

“This type of crime involves one of the most vulnerable groups in society and we will take every step we can to protect them.

“Officers in the Obscene Publications and Internet Unit will continue their work in order to cause minimum disruption to those committing this type of crime.

“There exists a high level of cooperation between police forces throughout the UK and internet service providers, which will continue.

“I want to make it very clear that offenders can no longer hide behind the anonymity of internet technology.

“We can and will trace and identify them.”
