Man on murder charge

By Katy Edwards on Thursday, 8th June 2000.

A MAN has appeared in court charged with murder after a youth died from stab wounds.
Daniel Fernandez, 34, of Snowdon Court, Haverhill, was remanded in custody until June 13 when he appeared at St Edmundsbury magistrates on Monday after being charged with the murder of 17-year-old Henry Solt.
Mr Solt died outside his home between Harewood Terrace and Chester Court on the Clements estate on Friday evening.
His mother, Pat, found him lying in the road as she arrived home at around 8pm. Fernandez was arrested by police on Friday and charged with murder on Saturday evening.
Friends and neighbours gathered where Mr Solt died, trying to come to terms with the tragedy.
His best friend, Ian Townsend, 16, of Chester Court, held him in his arms as he died. A female friend placed her coat under his head and a neighbour called 999, but Mr Solt was certified dead at the scene.
Mr Townsend said: “I can’t sleep. I just keep going over it in my head.”
He said they had been planning to buy a motorbike between them for the sununer.
“We’ve had our ups and downs, but he was my best mate,” he added.
Mr Townsend’s mother, Wendy Chiisnall, said: “Ian just wants to sit here where it happened.”
The area between Chester Court and Harewood Terrace was cordoned off to allow police forensic teams to investigate.
They searched wheelie bins and under a car bonnet.
Kate Byrne, of Chester Court, near the scene of the alleged attack, said: “It’s a close-knit estate. Everyone knows everyone.”
Mark Staples of Chester Court, said: “It’s one of those things that you just don’t think will ever happen on your own doorstep.”
