Marilyn triumphs at the double

Thursday, 13th June 2002.

COMPETING in two events at the same time did not prove too much for Haverhill's Marilyn Anness as she helped West Suffolk Athletic Club remain unbeaten in the Southern Women's League.

Anness took part in the pole vault and hammer and came out victorious in both as West Suffolk scored 217 points to beat Southend by 51 in the third fixture of the season. In the hammer, Dawn Mason followed up Anness' achievements by winning the B final.

Haverhill's Jemma Thake produced strong performances in a number of the senior events. She won the B 100m her training partner Louisa Wells took the A 100m then clocked 59.2sec for second place in the 400m and played a major part in the sprint relay team's winning effort.

Their was double success in the under-15 high jump as Wendy Meadows-Smith (1.55m) and Dianna Firbank (1.30m) won the A and B string events.

At the senior level, Tania Spurling and Anna Clayton repeated the earlier double success in the A and B high jump. Spurling equalled her personal best with 1.60m and then junior woman Anna Clayton took the honours with 1.45m.

Newmarket athletes Clare McCusker and Megan O'Hare were winners in the under-15 A and B 1500m respectively.

The team are now in second place in the league their highest ever position and in the next match they visit league-leaders Tonbridge.

On Saturday, the Suffolk Schools Championships will take place at Ipswich. On Sunday, West Suffolk will host their first fixture of the season with an East Anglian League match at West Suffolk Arena which starts at 11.45am.
