Matthew Hancock MP welcomes excellent employment figures in West Suffolk and UK

Thursday, 12th November 2015.

Matthew Hancock MP has strongly welcomed new figures today showing the number of people in West Suffolk claiming job seekers allowance and universal credit has decreased by 34.6% over the past year.

Official Statistics show that the total number of claimants in West Suffolk is now at 510, down from 780 last year and youth unemployment has decreased by 48.6% at 95 from 185.

Nationally, the employment rate is at the highest in our history at 73.7 per cent of people and unemployment has fallen to a seven year low – at 5.3 per cent.

Commenting, Matthew said:
“It is absolutely fantastic that employment is at the highest rate in our history at 73.7% and young people in work at 74.3% - is the highest in more than a decade.

“In West Suffolk we have seen a huge 34.6% reduction in unemployment and there is an incredible 48.6% drop in youth employment over the past year. Whilst we have one of the lowest levels of unemployment in the country, I am not complacent and will continue to do all I can to help those in looking for a job, get back into work. One person unemployed is one person too many”.
