Mayor gives backing to local befriending scheme

Monday, 5th March 2012.

On Friday Haverhill town mayor, Cllr Maureen Byrne, attended the launch party for the Haverhill Hub of the Suffolk Befriending Scheme.

The Haverhill Hub offers some of the town’s most vulnerable adults – many with mental health needs and significant learning disabilities – a place to go and enjoy the company of other adults, and join in with a range of different activities and events each week.

Congratulating Ruth Barton, volunteer co-ordinator for the hub, Cllr Byrne said: “This is a wonderful initiative that gives real help and support to some of the most vulnerable people in Haverhill. The town council is delighted to support you."

The town council recognises the importance of schemes like this to Haverhill, Cllr Byrne said.

“I believe strongly that without the fantastic work of volunteer groups like the Befriending Scheme, the town would really struggle. They are a vital part of the community and the town council is proud to support them.”

The Befriending Scheme provides friendship and learning opportunities for adults from vulnerable groups, including those with mental health needs and older people.

It also offers a variety of volunteering opportunities. Core activities are running regular drop-in centres, known as hubs, such as the one in Haverhill, building meaningful one-to-one friendships between vulnerable people and volunteer befrienders, evening befrienders clubs and Saturday morning groups.

The scheme also runs one-off themed activity days, workshops and social events as well as providing volunteer training and support for carers across Suffolk.
