Medical Centre Plans to be aired

Tuesday, 25th March 2003.

PLANS for a new purpose-built modern medical centre at Haverhill will be unveiled at a special meeting in the town tonight.

Announcing the planned expansion of general practice facilities in the town will be Dr Andrew Cornish, lead partner in Dr Cornish and Partners, and Dr Caroline Platt who operates out of the Clements Surgery in Greenfields Way.

Dr Platt is to become a partner with Dr Cornish and Partners from the beginning of April. The meeting will provide the forum for the amalgamated practice, serving more than 15,000 patients, to reveal proposals to build a new two-storey medical centre, complete with pharmacy, on land beside the existing Clements Surgery.

Architect Paul Phelps and project manager Richard Warner will make a presentation to the Mayor of Haverhill, Mary Martin, ward representatives from the town council, the Rev Edmund Betts from Suffolk West Primary Care Trust and representatives from other community groups.

"The proposed new surgery will be a very positive step for healthcare provision to the local Clements community and Haverhill as a whole," said Marion McLaine, practice manager for Dr Cornish and Partners.

"It will be a modern design with a plain exterior, but the interior will include a double-height atrium-style entrance which will fill the inside with light."

If approved, the new Clements Surgery will provide accommodation for five doctors to see patients, as well as facilities for minor surgery in nurse treatment rooms with practice nurses and health care assistants working alongside.

In addition there will be space to run disease management clinics for long-term medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

The existing surgery has facilities for three doctors and two nurses, and has two portable buildings attached to provide additional space.

The planned new surgery on the Clements Estate will complement Dr Cornish and Partners' existing facilities at Christmas Maltings Surgery.
