Message getting through about high street parking

Monday, 20th June 2011.

Police efforts to combat illegal parking in Haverhill town centre look as if they are beginning to pay off.

After the first week of police action to issue warning notices to offending motorists, saw a total of over 220 handed out, the second week saw a 60 per cent decrease, with only 70 being issued.

PC Will Wright of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team said this showed the message was getting through because the police had put in just as much effort in patrols during the second week.

"Attitudes are definitely changing," said PC Wright. "Whereas people used to just park anywhere you can see them spending time looking for somewhere safe to park.

"We would like to thank the public for their help and co-operation."

The head of the SNT, Insp Chris Galley, said they were expecting Suffolk County Council to re-paint the double yellow lines imminently. When this was done police would then review the situation with regard to the stage at which they would move to enforcement.

The action was taken in response to a public meeting of the SNT a fortnight ago, at which residents made it clear they were fed up with the current situation.

PC Wright said they had tried to take action in the past and come up against considerable opposition from the motorists and the public in general, who complained both to police and councils.

But there was a different atmosphere about now, he said. "I think the time has come when people have just had enough," he said. "People are now in favour of the action, which we have been relentless about over the past two weeks. Now we have to keep that up."
