Millenium Maze gets the nod

Thursday, 27th July 2000.

HAVERHILL’S Millennium Maze has been officially launched, with two mayors walking around the site at the East Town Park.
Coun John Wayman, Mayor of St Edmundsbnry, and Coun Gerry Kiernan, Haverhill Town Mayor, were both on hand to give the official seal to the unique piece of willow art.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council commissioned artist Jim Buchanan to create the maze, by moulding the landscape to form a series of circular forms inspired by early burial mounds, earth works and labyrinths.
Working with volunteers from Haverhill Volunteer Centre, Mr Buchanan planted dips and mounds with different varieties of willow. Selected branches have been twisted and woven to form a complex pattern.
Summer growth is green and lush, while winter reveals the different colours of the wood. The council’s award-winning parks section has worked closely with the artist and planted a wild flower meadow, mown with paths.
Bury St Edmunds Arts Gallery worked with local organisations on the maze and another site in Bury St Edmunds after receiving National Lottery funding.
